Are you watching the third season of White Lotus? I am excited for the end of 90 minutes on Sunday. This week, I was delighted to talk to Alex Bovaird, the brilliant costume designer behind the three seasons, about Parker Posey, shoes with links and a lot of sweat …
Your career sounds like a dream! But, of course, each job has difficult parts, often behind the scene. What is something complicated that you faced?
All sweat. A person is a sweat or not, and if you are a sweat, you will sweat profusely in Thailand. Walton Goggins, who plays Rick, was profuse. We brought Thompson Tees from the United States to absorb everyone’s sweat; We cut the neck so you couldn’t see them under the clothes. The armpit material looks like a health towel, quite disgusting!
What about Tim Ratliff? It seems sweaty, as, as a personality.
Tim was dry bone; In fact, we had to apply costume sweat.
My British grandfather always said that men sweat and women shine.
Women had ice packages; Parker [Posey] He had one almost continuously between his thighs.
Was it fun to wear the character of Parker Posey, the southern matriarch Victoria Ratliff?
Yeah! We knew that she and Timothy would open and close her bag for the Lorazepam, so we had to find the perfect elegant bag: the Gucci with the bamboo handle is the old school and looks good with everything. In a perfect world, it would look more worn, but I took brand bags and I have to return them.
I love Piper dresses. She uses at least three from Ciao Lucía. Was it a choice, since she is a recent university graduate that could be loyal to a favorite brand?
Actually, we just found a collection that reached the right notes. The dresses of Ciao Lucía are capricious, and Piper is ethereal, or at least he thinks it is. You can design the dresses to be sexy, but at the height of Piper, the length of the dresses felt caste.
What about the boys? Saxon is so … that guy.
As costume designer, you want to stereotypar a littleso that the audience can say, Oooh I know who this person is. Particularly in the episode of arrivals, we presented it and made it stronger. My husband and I live in the south, and there are brands that I have only seen there, such as Southern Tide. We also dressed with Saxon in Polo and Brooks Brothers. We wanted to do it cheesy, not as ‘dad’ but as a literal dad.
That’s funny.
But we never want to go too far. After the first episode, I thought, let’s not do the croakies sunglasses and The boat shoes, let’s remove an element. We are not Zoonder. We want to be satire, no comedy.
Honestly, Saxon really grew in me. In the seventh episode, it almost seems sweet.
He has a trip, so his attacks become a little more beautiful; That was on purpose. We were like, Wow, you really look a little handsome.
What about Belinda? I loved his pink caftan with green leaves and fish.
Belinda loves a good flow. She has never been a guest in the white lotus, so she wants to look like one as much as she can. She doesn’t want to look like poor Belinda. She wants to be Cinderella.
The three friends are always together. How did you differences?
At first, all are great girls. But as the season progresses, you notice that Laurie is more comfortable. When he goes out for the day, wear loose traveler pants with his little backpack and his most nerdier hat. Kate is more prison. And Jaclyn is the actress; She wants attention.
What is an example of revealing those features through your costumes?
When they return after their great night, Lori takes off his clothes and jumps to the pool. Jacqueline comes out in a ridiculously extravagant leopard print suit with a gown: it has a great momenty moment. And Kate actually puts pajamas and dresses more.
Of all the characters, who do you like the most?
I am a older Chelsea. I am British, she is British; There is an elegant launch tone launch neck that the British sometimes have. For his character, we bought second hand and cut off the dresses to make them shorter.
Has people comment on the clothes that have surprised you?
Sometimes I take a shameless look online when I am in the bathroom, but above all I stay out of social networks. We put many small clues in the design of costumes, but I have not seen anyone notice them. Maybe he disseminates them after the end.
If you had a magical wand, what place would you choose for the fourth season of White Lotus?
The Swiss Alps. I wouldn’t mind getting people out of the bikinis and coats. We could have European real ones in sweaters, skins and ears. We could do a really bad APE ski atmosphere.
Thanks Alex! Follow her on Instagram, if you wish; And she also has a shopmy page with clothes inspired by each character.
