Ten years ago, author Emma Copley Eisenberg bought a 1,100 square feet house in Philadelphia that needed a lot of work. “Brome, it is not a joke, that the renewal took five years of my life,” she says. His partner Art Phùng moved five years later, and together they chose paint colors and merged their styles. Here is a tour of its colorful home, with cameos of its three cats …

LIVING ROOM

SOFA: Joybird.

In a charming repaire: Emma: When house hunting in 2015, it had a tight budget, but I was waiting for a place with original characteristics. This house needed a lot of work, but I fell in love with the front window, the mantle and the ladder. The floor was covered with rare vinyl tiles (these beautiful wooden parquet floors were hidden below). In the top closet, a child had written a poem in Purple Crayon! The house, as my father would say, had a soul.

On a couch that saves marriage: Emma: When art moved, I had a small sad sofa, and we had wars of good character about who could occupy it and how stretched they could be, especially with three cats. A couple of years ago, we decided that the situation was unsustainable if we wanted to stay in love. We needed a sofa that our cats did not destroy and where we could both extend. Enter a joybird sectional sofa into the performance velvet.

Painting: 36 hours in Marrakh from the bottom. Higher and correct drawings: by her friend Elissa Martel. Cat portrait of his friend Steve Teare. Toni Morrison and Ocean Vuong EMPTUTIONS: By her friend Jacqueline Alnes. Tiger Print, from Reesa Bobeaesa. Spears pillows: Ikea and Ikea.

About love pets: Art: Before I met Emma, I considered me more a dog person. But now I am definitely a capital dad-C cat.

Cat portrait: By Emma. E Decoration: Vintage. Flag printing: By William N. Copley, Emma’s grandfather. Floor lamp: Ikea.

In relaxing rituals: Emma: In our house, on Friday night it means making a guacamanada, taking a edible and seeing a comedy special. The white garbage of Moses Storm and the intruder by Atsuko Okatsuka are favorites of all time. In addition, anything of the comedians Naomi Ekperigin or Sabrina Wu.

In follows to follow: Emma: Grace Paley’s cut was one of our wedding table toppers. I printed photos of different authors, then hit them to wooden pieces of brightness. We had 16, and after the wedding, we kept Grace Paley, James Baldwin and Carson Mcullers. They are the holy patterns of our house.

When merging styles: Emma: I am much older and fast of books and American-Doll-Victorians, “while the aesthetics of art is tilted cleanest, more elegant, more modern.
Art: It was fun for us to discover the middle ground.

In members of the Feline Family: Emma: That’s Tofu. The gray cat is Gabriel, and black and white is sesame. Before meeting us, he had Gabriel, and art had Tofu and Sesame. When we fuse the homes, we suddenly had two with coincident names and one without. People are always like, ‘Tofu, Sesame … And Gabriel?’ ‘

DINING ROOM

Painting: Luna harvest and tan lines from the bottom. Chairs: Article. Alotation unit: Custom, similar. Collanging light: similar.

In friends food: Art: I love making a hot pot night. We will put a portable hot pot on the dining table and ask their friends to bring their favorite ingredients. I will do one side of the pot with spicy broth, and the other non -spicy side. Engoki fungi, tofu skins and napa cabbage are favorites. The most complicated part are the sauces, but I will only teach people how to do them.

Printing the food container with flowers: Natasha Martin. Cat art work: Steve Teare.

On useful shelves: Emma: Philadelphia Row’s houses are notoriously narrow, there is not even a closet on our first floor! We wanted to have a real dining table and we also needed storage in the dining room, so we added these shelves.
Art: It is good to have a place where we can exhibit all our cheap.

White leadership plate and black and white splashes: by Emma. Floral ceramic tray: “For my ceramic teacher, Corinna Cowles.” Cookie bottle: from Emma’s childhood house.

In silly hobbies: EMMA: This jar of cat shaped cookies, called Gertrude, was in my childhood’s house. Not many cookies lived in Gertrude as a child, but we have the vision of always keeping her full. I have been making ceramics from high school, but I did it again this year in my local study. I like to do something creative in which I don’t have to be good. It is also physical, and large thighs are an asset!

In a wedding memory: Art: Our wedding was such a cheerful day. All our guests signed this document, which essentially says they are committed to support our relationship. When I look at this wall, I remember the love I have with Emma and the love that our community feels for us.

KITCHEN

Painting: Paul’s honey from the bottom. Teeras: Art collection, including family relics and one coloama. Hanging lights: Etsy, similar. Feces: oversock.

When choosing paint: Art: I was willing to look at every color tone to choose one, just because I am a designer. But Emma found a backdrop. Since they have cured the colors that work well together, we end up obtaining all our wall painting from them. The houses in oars can be a bit dark inside, so we choose warm down to rejoice.

At tea schedules: Art: I start my morning with a tea with caffeine. In the afternoon, we will take a break for tea, like a peak. Then, at night, if we have people for dinner, we will serve herbal tea in the living room as a glass of night.

BEDROOM

Painting: Transmission safari from the bottom. Macrame Wall Hanging: Twine and Twig. Bed: CB2, similar. WOOD MANALLA: IKEA.

In vibrate changes: Emma: We are trying not to buy anything for our house these days, but focusing on things that change the energy of space, such as dry branches. We make candles at home wearing tutorials of candle sails in Tiktok. It is an easy way to wear empty domestic vessels.

Emma office

Painting: 36 hours in Marrakh from the bottom. Chaise: Ikea. Desk: Fezibo. Heart lamp: Ikea.

When writing from the heart: Emma: I always tell my writing students to move towards what are curious or obsessed, whatever you feel alive. Somehow, the less traditionally the subject is, the better.

In low -cost works of art: Emma: “I got into the collage during season 1 of the pandemic as a way of dealing and because all the materials are easily found in the house. I still love it.”

ABROAD

In neighborhood books: EMMA: I added a small free library in front of the house in 2016, since public libraries in Philadelphia have been fighting with hours and personal, and many public schools in Philadelphia do not have school libraries. The children in the block painted me.

Thank you very much for sharing your warm and loving home with us, Art and Emma!

PD: Many more homemade tours and the Emma Atue Week.
