Robert Sugden Is Dreaming in Color

From butter and brunette blondes from Mousse Mocha to dreamy and bright vivid cakes, this summer is color! No one knows better than Robert Sugden (@robertsugdenhair). Miete by some of the main colorists of the industry, including Steven Tapp, Lorri Goddard and George Papanikolas, Sugden combines classical and new techniques to create a fashion and vibrant color adapted to highlight the best characteristics of their customers. It also cuts and stylizes all textures, making it versatile effortlessly. When it is not behind the chair, it creates attractive content in social networks, from related humorous reels to impressive images that show their hair transformations. He also recently launched a podcast that co-elbitrion with two hairmates. To learn more about his dynamic career in the hair industry, we communicated with Sudgen, who shared his advice for success, which anticipates being the largest hair trends this year and much more.

Beauty Launchpad (Blp): What is a fun fact about you that others could not know?

Robert Sugden (RS): A fun fact about me is that once I lived in China for a short time!

Blp: Tell us about your trip in the industry. How did you start?

RS: When I decided to look for the hair, I approached my aunt Steven Tapp’s stylist and asked him if he would let me help him. I was with him for about two years, and it was one of the best experiences! He began my beginning and he really taught me how to understand the hair.

Blp: Who and/or what inspires your work behind the chair?

RS: Make people feel good inspires me! I love the connection I have with my customers, and work behind the chair is a gift! It is a real form of “wig”!

Blp: Who has lied to you or served an important role in your journey as a hair professional?

RS: Working together with Steven Tapp and other incredible stylists, such as Lorri Goddard, has been the best learning experience I could have asked! Having a mentor or mentors is very important, and I don’t think I may have done without them!

Blp: Can you share an outstanding memory or experience of your time in the industry? What did so shocking for you?

RS: The training under the iconic Steven TapP was definitely shocking for me! I remember that one day we were combing Ricky Martin, and Steven asked Ricky if I could make me a snack because I was starving and did not have lunch. Seeing how Steven always remained faithful to himself taught me so much, and I remember this day as if it were yesterday!

Blp: What advice would you give to the stylists who have just entered the industry?

RS: My advice for new stylists is assistance! Go and learn under a stylist who really inspires you! Find a mentor and absorb everything they can share with you!

Blp: What do you think the industry can do better to help hair professionals to succeed? What holes do you see that should be filled?

RS: I think that preparing stylists for success, making sure people know that they can grow and do whatever possible! The living room can sometimes feel like a trap! I think that giving people the freedom to grow as high as they want is so essential!

Blp: What are your best tips for success in the industry?

RS: The best advice I can give is to appear on time, work hard and be reliable with your clientele!

Blp: You are known for your work as colorist. What advice do you have for other stylists who want to improve their color technique and grow their own skills?

RS: My advice for any young stylist or stylist who feels trapped in his trade is to take classes! Go and learn from someone who inspires you! We all have something to share, and this industry is an endless learning trip.

BLP: What are some of your biggest challenges as colorist? What have you learned from those challenges?

RS: One of my biggest challenges as colorist is to learn when to say no. When a client has damaged the hair and comes to me to “perform a miracle”, I need to learn to say that sometimes! Sometimes they need several times to reach the ultimate goal of a client. I am working on this doing more throughout the consultations and informing my clients about the process that will be needed to achieve their goal.

Blp: Recently you launched a podcast, tell us more about it! What made you interested in starting this new effort?

RS: The podcast is called “about prosecuted!” I wanted to create a platform where I can talk about life as a stylist, which happens behind the chair and life of the living room and have a space where stylists can cotylers and talk about trends! Starting a podcast has been a dream for a long time. I will be organizing the podcast with two friends of “Cabello”, Kourtnee (@Thecolourchemist) and Geysha (@Geysha.mane.envy). When I met them, I knew that this moment was the right time, so we all collaborated and we started the process. I can’t wait for you to see what we create!

Blp: You also have an incredible presence in social networks! What advice for stylists who want to improve their content creation and grow their platform this year?

RS: Social networks are what you do of him. My advice is to create consistent content, publish daily and be creative! Don’t take yourself so seriously and just publish!

Blp: Can you break down some hair trends that expect to be popular in 2025? Why do you think these looks are popular now?

RS: I think that hair trends in the 1960s will return in 2025. The 60s brought us volume, movement and sophistication! I see many trends that show this, from the soft wave combined to the volume bulge in the back! The 60s are definitely in my hair forecast! When it comes to color, I think the “natural luxury” will be inside! I see many customers advancing towards low maintenance tones, such as soft brunettes and low maintenance blondes.
