Inconceivable! A beautiful story about this iconic word The princess bride can help us understand the concept of Ahimsa in a fun and nuanced way.

The actor Wallace Shawn spent hours and hours saying the word “inconceivable” in each conceivable way until it finally affected the pronunciation he was looking for. However, in the film, his trust shook when he noticed that other veteran actors imitated the word behind them.

Ahimsa It is not violence, but it can also be considered as “not hurting.” And as we all know, making fun of people can certainly harm.

But the damage to which Ahimsa refers is even more nuanced. Wallace’s trust was shocked because, understandably, he thought that imitation was mocking intentionally. But making assumptions about someone’s intention (especially if his intention is negative) is also Ahimsa. It is crazy to think about it in this way, but in reality you are causing damage to yourself, making assumptions about someone’s intention. And carrying this even further, you are also damaging. Allowing someone’s words to take preferences about their own clear experience, makes their emotional security and self -confidence suffer.

Fortunately, Shawn decided to ask directly. He admitted that he was worried that they were making fun of him. His vulnerability was worth it. Shawn recalled: “I thought they were making fun of me, but it turned out to love how it sounded. It was the final fulfillment.”

If Shawn had not had that sincere conversation, he could have spent the following months reproducing that moment imitated again and again in his head. Reproducing negative moments in our heads is another nuance from Ahimsa. Psychology research supports that the reproduction of negative scenes raises those same negative emotions as strongly as if it simply happened. That is certainly harmful!

What about the damage that all this does to our relationships? How would this have changed the emotional trust Shawn had with his fellow actors?

And the wave? This word became iconic. It extended to the world! But what would happen if Shawn, now aware of himself, would have subtly changed the way he said the word? It is crazy to think that this moment could have a domino effect, but yoga talks about each Moment to have a undulation effect.

It is inconceivable that we go through our life never cause harm. But now that we have conceived a more nuanced way to see Ahimsa, we have a little more space to think (and perhaps rethink) our actions and the actions of others.
