What’s a Kind Thing Someone’s Said or Done for You?

When I first separated, I left my children in his father’s apartment every Tuesday night and greet happily (“Have fun!”), But as soon as the building’s door closed behind them, I would feel my lower lip. (I treasure my solo time now, but those first days were difficult.

My friends Mo and Nathan lived half a block from us, so in those nights, I often headed to their apartment. They would be juggling with the preparation of dinner and task with their four children, but always, without fail, they would greet me with great smiles and lifted another chair at their dining table. His home was a place of landing so soft, and my eyes still click with tears when I think of that daily kindness.

Cut to this last December. My children were traveling with their father, so I was spending the eve of Christmas alone. He had planned a quiet night at home (HBO and grilled cheese), but when the sun was put on, those old staggering feelings were flooded again.

“Hey, could I ever happen?” I sent a text message to MO, trying to sound casual. “Are you having a quiet family time? Don’t worry in any way!”

Without thinking twice, Mo insisted that he was coming, so I walked home, played with his children, ate too many sugar cookies, I saw some magic tricks and took a family portrait for them. Before returning home, happy and pink, I thanked Mo and Nathan, and he looked at me and replied, seriously: “Come at any time, and come every time.”

“Come at any time and see each time.” My heart! How beautiful and open that is that? How calming you are looking for? How beautiful and generous declaration of friendship.

When they arrived at our House for Brunch is spring, I took this photo of them and, later, I framed it as a gift, which, after all, they have done me for me, feels a bit like the cord. 🙂
