If you are not planning food yet, let me tell you, you are missing. I started doing it to save time, but now I swear that I also save my sanity. Here is why it works:

I only plan dinners from Monday to Friday: on weekends they are our time to relax, become spontaneous or try something fun! And if you have leftovers of the week, even better. Simply keep them in a hermetic container and enjoy one night without cooking on the couch.
