Lauren O.’s Manhattan Apartment Is a Love Letter to Rituals

We are excited about readers all the time during our meetings of the Jo Cup team, and Lauren O. It is a name that often arises. A reader from the beginning, has left many hilarious and moving comments (think: “Hang my goose”, a birthday understanding and what happened when she eliminated Pokémon going from her phone). Other readers have asked to learn more about her, so today we are delighted to present her Manhattan apartment in a room, which she shares with her husband, Joe, and two beloved cats …

Chairs: Vintage Niels Otto Møller of Housing Works Thrift. Ship pillows: pendleton. Stereo: “Joe’s Audiophile ‘Frankensystem’: It is a Linn tasks in a personalized socket with a Leben amplifier next to him, and devour the loyalty speakers.”

When moving to New York: Joe and I came from San Francisco to Manhattan in 2003 so that I could happen in a public relations magazine. Originally we think we would stay during the summer, so the movement felt little pressure. But then we fell in love with the city. Before New York, I never found a city that spoke to me. Then, at the end of my internship, when they offered me a full -time job, my answer was ‘of course’.

Red lamp on the record shelf: Nicholas Furrow. Registration shelves: “Joe and our friend George made them.” Media Center: Design within Craigslist, similar. Red lamp at the coffee table: Mantar.

In personal style: Our design atmosphere is similar to the Christmas windows of Bergdorf Goodman, if they were made by and for Mapaches, since we love brilliant things. I would also describe it as a feeling of Metropolitan Goblin: there are many records, books, orbes, minerals and rocks.

Art mural: savings of the works of the house. Registration shelf: CB2, similar. Pink lamp: vintage, through Furlong. Plant shelf: ethnic crafts. Coffee table: Jordan Crowell. Red lamp: Mantar. Section: Saba Italia, similar. Moth -spear pillow: shy beasts. Carpet: Saint-Oue flea market in Paris.

In bursts of color: Before the pandemic, there was definitely less color in the apartment. But once we were trapped here all the time, we wanted to cheer on things. Joe was actually the one who said: “We have to get a pink section.” So, we went for it.

1984 book collection

In a travel tradition: He used to be a volunteer at the Housing Works bookstore, and one day a mysterious Frenchman entered asking if we had copies of George Orwell’s novel 1984. We took out all these different editions, and he was on the moon, saying that while traveling, he always goes to local bookstores and asks for an 1984 edition of his country. I thought that was the best idea. The book was published in a language trillion, and was launched in new editions. If you read the various presentations, people love to frame it in terms of the current political moment of your country; It is an interesting lens to see other places. Now I have assumed his tradition like mine.

About the art of fiber: Paso in random phases where I have the need to make fiber art. I made a portrait of Debbie Harry during our first summer in New York, when Joe was as a legal assistant and never at home. A few years later, I embroidered a portrait of David Bowie in a bag for a contest carried out by the now missing Rachel Nasvik bag brand. I ended up winning!

Lauren and Maya

In the dear cats of cats: We adopt our Maddie cat in Anaheim, California, while I was visiting the family. He had been a street running in some parking lot, and we found him in Petfinder. Then we adopted Maya a year ago. Originally he lived with his five kittens in a shelter to kill in Tennessee, and then in some way they ended in Staten Island? The fact that she ended up there with her babies always makes me laugh because she reminds me of Madonna’s music video, Pope Don’s preaches.

Basket: Swahili African Modern. Banco Azul: West Elm. Tiger spears pillows: Williams Sonoma. Dudremo: “A White West Elm comforted that I had in super authorization and then dyed and applied with a lot of padded remains.”

In a love for a long time: Joe and I met 26 years ago, while studying abroad at the University of Oxford in England. For one of our first dinners, he made this fantastic, complicated vegetarian thai That gesture meant a lot because in the past, the previous bride and groom made me feel like shit for being a vegetarian. As if it were a nuisance to work. But Joe has always taken my needs seriously and my eccentricities at a pace, such as when I wake up in the middle of the night because I am sad because of the way people are bad with pigeons, and always listen to me and makes me feel careful.

Dachshunds de Oro: Vintage through Atlantis Home.

In favorite books: I always recommend the magic of Kelly Link for beginners, a series of short fantasy stories. You can feel that your brain cultivated new wrinkles and acquires new neuronal pathways while you read. She is so creative and I am so in love with the way she joins her stories. I can’t imagine that anyone does not find this magical book.

Painting: Middleton Pink of Farrow & Ball. Fungal launch pillow: John Derian for Target. Fungal printing: David Shrigley. Wolf printing: “From a festival in Montreal. I saw them all over the subway and ended up writing to the festival team asking if I could buy one. Then they sent me a free couple.” Bed: CB2. Velvet launch pillows: West Elm and Timorous Beasties. Brass bookstore: One Kings Lane, similar.

In fungus decoration: It all started sending a release to Mushroom People magazine on an artist who made stains inoculated with fungal spores in which he could be buried. In theory, the fungus would consume it. Putting that piece ended up stimulating a lifetime fungi enthusiasm. Now I am part of the Mycological Society of New York, a group of citizen scientists and collectors who are really in fungi and super generous with their knowledge. Now, during the walks, I look for sticks with exciting things that grow in them and present them to the most expert members such as a retriever with a Frisbee.

About traveling with parents: The girl’s photo is my mother. A couple of years ago, Joe and I started a tradition of vacation with her and my stepfather Doug. Mom and I love walking all day, so we will get our comfortable shoes and leave. Then Joe and Doug will go to a sports bar and chat about baseball data. For our first trip, we went to the United Kingdom, and found a lake in the middle of the Brezada de Hampstead in which only women can swim. And although it was November and frozen, my mother and I left. After that, we officially decided that we were officially slag and had to swim everywhere. In Iceland, we went to the lagoons, and when we visited my sisters, we always choose a hotel or vacation rental with a pool.

Credenza: Vintage. White lamp: Verner Panton. Rhino: endowed with his mother.

In special gifts: My mother surprised me with this rhino for Christmas. She was an art history student who took a lot of studio art classes, such as furniture and carpet manufacturing courses. When she and my dad married, they were as poor as the mice of the Church, so they basically did everything in their department. His was that if you reflect on something enough time, you can find a great way to do it. She is a great influence on my sisters and me. We always ask ourselves: “What can I do to go in our space?” And “what can I do for other people to show them how much I love them?”

KITCHEN

Manhattan apartment home

When working on old design options: Our kitchen is not our style. But it was new when we moved and is in very good condition, so I cannot imagine spending money to start the counters. As a solution, I have added personal touches. I have been changing the knobs of the cabinet one at a time, so none of them coincides. Some are snails, some mushrooms, one is a resin knob with a lot of moss inside. I also started drawing this mural. Changing the kitchen initially felt an annoying task, but it has become this space to give me permission to do what you want. And that has been very liberating.

Thank you very much, Lauren. We love you! Never stop commenting!

PD more homemade tours, including the ‘introverted nook’ of the AA reader and a yoga teacher whose Manhattan Studio apartment is a love letter for women.
