Last week, I co-organized an afternoon meeting to celebrate the new book by Suleika Jaoud and went out with loan friendships and the best conversation initiator …
First, did you ever read Suleika’s 2021 memories between two kingdoms? At 22, Suleika was diagnosed with leukemia with a 35% of long -term survival possibilities. A large part of the next four years passed in a hospital bed. But when doctors finally pronounced their “cancer free,” faced their next challenge: learn to live.
Now Suleika has written another beautiful publication: the book of Alchemy: a creative practice for an inspired life. “The newspaper saved my life during difficult times,” he told us, so he created a newspaper guide with indications and stimulating trials of creative companions such as her husband Jon Batiste, Ann Patchett, Jia Tolentino, George Saunders and many others.
In my living room, Suleika read an essay of his book, then asked us to spend 10 minutes writing something, anything, about our hands. The notice was so specific that everyone had ideas immediately and began to scribble.
I, writing about bite my nails
Before Diario, Suleika told us, sometimes a question is written. “Elizabeth Gilbert wrote an essay for the book,” he explains. “She has a long data practice, where she opens her entries in the newspaper with ‘Dear love, what will you let me know today?’ I have followed your example and also took my own freedoms.
Another notice was to close his eyes and draw a giraffe. The most difficult part was the places!
Boer Clare and Debe Perelman
We laugh at our terrible results. The exercise helped break the ice and remind us that the newspaper is not about being perfect.
Amber also and Suleika
Finally, Suleika asked us to tour the room and share something that we would put in our “unofficial curriculum.” For example, she has three dogs, and since her husband thinks that three are plentySuleika now helps friends to find their own ideal dogs.
Nell Diamond, Priya Parker and Brit Bennett
I loved hearing people’s secret talents and passions. Priya Parker, above, told us that she is a good casamera for the people who want to read again: “I ask a lot of questions and then I prescribe three books to start.” As for Perelman by Smitten Kitchen? “It was a synchronized swimming in high school. It’s a very hard sport!”
Peyton Dix, Hrishikesh Hirway and Nell Diamond
Hrishikesh Hirway musician explained that he is a cookie enthusiast with chocolate sparks and that he can name the best cookies with chocolate sparks in any city he has visited. (Your New York winner? Jacques Torres).
Hitha Palepu, Hunter Harris and Peyton Dix
“My secret talent is being a great guest at the wedding,” said Hunter Harris. “I will dress for the occasion, I will take excellent photos on the social networks of the bride and the boyfriend, I always have a tie/buffer/additional listerine mirror, and I love to make a small conversation with their relative or random family partner.”
All afternoon he felt so magical, largely because Suleika and his book were very magical. The book has such convincing, fun and introspective indications, I feel inspired to start a newspaper club: I could meet to write separately on a shared warning and then discuss whatever arises for you. Would you ever do that? I strongly recommend this wonderful book for you, a gift, anyone who enjoys writing, therapy, looking windows, deep thoughts, the meaning of life, everything!
Thank you very much, Suleika. Xoxo
