“For a long time, I concentrated on what I did not fit, compared to the pieces that really seemed good to me. I dressed for utility, even to the point of looking without form. A small part of me always thought: ‘Someday, I find clothes when I am a smaller size.’ Then, while I wrote my third novel, I realized that I no longer want to wait. Oh, it works in me. I am excited to slide it for appointment nights. “

“I really admire the costume designer Matthew Hemesath and his work in Girls5eva. In fact, I sent him a cold email about how he wanted to write about a woman of forty and so many years who found her personal style. He was so charming and gave me good advice. His advice #1 was to embrace the confrontation of patterns and use combinations of unexpected colors. Matthew says that the brightest colors naturally make you feel safe, and the patterns shock works because they then act as neutral. “

“Matthew’s advice makes me think of The Mindy projectwhere Mindy Kaling’s character always carried striking designs that collided but worked well. This orange top is not something that I would have used in the past. Combining it with black pants makes me feel punished, but one day I will generate confidence to use it with a colorful skirt. “

“My other strategy was to find a mentor whose style I admired. They do not have to look exactly like you, but maybe they have a similar shape and tone of skin; then identify what you like in their style and emulate it. I love the way Natasha Rothwell dress, especially the pieces he used during his press tour of how to die alone and his costume of Sleakaha.

“I am still discovering clothes, but all this experience made me understand why people are so happy to assemble outfits. I am excited to experiment with more looks that push me out of my comfort zone and give me the freedom to wear pieces that I always renounce in the past.”
