What is chopped cheese?

A chopped cheese is like a burger on a hero bun. This is usually a preformed burger, coated in marinade and sautéed with onions. It is cut into pieces and covered with American cheese. When the cheese is melted, it is placed on a bun (hero or kaiser) that is covered with a little mayonnaise and ketchup. It is then topped with shredded lettuce and tomato slices.

Ingredients to make chopped cheese

  1. Ground meat. I like to buy pre-formed burgers for this; It’s traditional.
  2. Dressing. You need this seasoning condiment to achieve an authentic atmosphere.
  3. Onions. The meat is sautéed with a handful of onions.
  4. American cheese. You can also use cheddar cheese. But I like the meltability of American cheese.
  5. Lettuce. Let’s go with iceberg for the crunch.
  6. Tomatoes. We want them on the slimmer side.

To cook the filling:

  • Place a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Start by heating the bread. I like to cut it in half and place it cut side down in the hot pan. You don’t want it toasted, just warmed. Repeat this with the roll.
