Cottage cheese cookie dough, overnight oats in a brown and white bowl with chocolate chips.

My toddler is OBSESSED with these Cottage Cheese Cookie Dough Balls I shared last month. So much so that he keeps ordering them for breakfast. I just couldn’t bring myself to get into that habit with her (although I guess they actually make a great breakfast) and felt like I needed to find a friendlier breakfast option.

Enter this Overnight Oats Cottage Cheese Cookie Dough. I know it seems completely strange to mix cottage cheese with oats, but hear me out. Not only does cottage cheese have a very mild flavor that goes perfectly with cookie dough, but it is also very rich in protein.

As someone who strives to get enough protein every day, I love that I can make my oatmeal more filling simply by using this trick. Don’t you believe me? I think it’s time you found out for yourself.

Why make this recipe?

  • High in protein – One serving of this Cottage Cheese Cookie Dough Overnight Oats recipe includes 18 grams of protein! To put this in perspective, that’s more protein than two large eggs.
  • Minimum dishes – Everything comes together in a single container! Easy cleaning included.
  • No need to cook – Not only is this recipe low on dishes, but it doesn’t require you to turn on any kitchen appliances.

Necessary ingredients

  • Rolled oats – the base of this overnight oats. Regular rolled oats are ideal. Feel free to take gluten-free products if necessary.
  • chia seeds – You can also substitute ground flaxseed if that’s all you have. This helps absorb the liquid and make the overnight oats nice and thick.
  • Maple syrup – for sweetener. You can reduce this if you like your cookie dough to have less sweet overnight oats.
  • Almond and vanilla milk – or other plant-based or plant-based milk.
  • Cottage cheese – Cottage cheese is surprisingly good with overnight oats. You can have any type you find, although my preference is the one with all the fat and a little bit of curd.
  • vanilla extract – Don’t skip this! This helps with the flavor of the cookie dough.
  • almond butter – this contributes to the flavor of the cookie dough but also adds a nice bit of fat to help balance the meal.
  • chocolate chips – I like to use Enjoy Life mini chocolate chips.

The instructions for this recipe are simple! Simply mix everything together in a large bowl or glass jar and let it sit overnight in the refrigerator (or for at least 8 hours). And in the morning a healthy breakfast awaits you!

Easy swaps and substitutions

Replace chocolate chips with m&ms – for a monster cookie dough version, feel free to replace the same or all of the chocolate chips with mini m&ms.

Make a funfetti version – Add sprinkles or replace the chocolate chips with sprinkles for a funfetti cookie dough!

Use honey instead of maple syrup – Honey is a perfect substitute for maple syrup if you don’t have maple syrup on hand.

Use yogurt instead of cottage cheese. – The flavors will not be exactly the same, but if necessary, you can replace the yogurt with cottage cheese.

Use peanut butter instead of almond butter – for a peanut cookie version substituted with peanut butter instead of almond butter!

–>Frequently asked questions

Should I eat this overnight oats cold?

Up to you! I like to eat them cold but if you prefer to heat them you sure can.

What type of cottage cheese should I use?

Both low fat and whole fat work great. Both small and large curds work too. In general, I prefer the taste and texture of full fat with a little curd.

Can I double the recipe?

Absolutely! Feel free to double or even triple the recipe to have healthy breakfasts prepared for the week.

What type of oats should I use?

I recommend using regular rolled oats for this recipe. I think quick cooking oats get too mushy. You can also try making this recipe following my Steel Cut Overnight Oats instructions.
