This week has been a mix of ups and downs, which I’m sure is the same for a lot of people; being so used to a structured day and all the tasks we perform within it. For me, I have had additional emotions related to leaving my teaching position after 23 years to begin a new journey within the nail industry in a semi-retired position. I don’t regret my decision and I’m very excited about what the future holds, but with new working practices putting the brakes on direct teaching practice and spending time with my clients, I’m feeling a little at sea!
So when I woke up this morning, the sun was shining and I looked out at the garden and a pot of hyacinths that a student had grown and brought me as a going away gift was in full bloom. Then I knew this was my mission for the day…recreate a flower in 3D!
Having done sugarcraft for many years, I love being able to study the subject up close and there have been many occasions where I have bought a flower just to observe it from bud to full opening to see how the shape changes and then pick it up. apart to investigate what the individual elements were and their part in the whole. I would just like to say at this point…no flowers were harmed in the process of my project!!
When deciding on the color I was sure that just a mauve would be right, but it was surprising how bluer they were! Also, the heads actually have a pattern on the buds…they look a little like a mermaid scale when closed, but as they fall and open, they form a spiral…and the shape of the flower represents an elongated bell with only the Vuelta very pointed, going from the palest mauve to white: nature’s own ombré!
To give my nail a slightly different look, I decided to almost face the flower… allowing me to show more of the open elements of the buds. The drawing I did was very basic as the shape is literally a triangle with a slight arched stem, which all things considered was quite thick, but I suppose it is necessary to hold each of the buds. I then started building the required shape – the top in one piece, which I then used my silicone tools to mark out the shape. Lowering each bud gives it an individual shape… I used white 4D gel, but I suppose if you had purple you could skip the painting stage and just add the definition, however I’m quite pleased with the result and look forward to my next one 3D Challenge…I have an idea, but I’ll share it later!!
